Children
6 ways to distract your child during the finger prick test
How to minimize needlestick pain in children
Finger prick testing is a quick and easy method for taking small samples of blood. This is why pediatricians still use capillary blood collection as the method of choice for obtaining blood samples from children. Doctors report that micro sampling “keeps kids calm, parents relaxed, and laboratory technicians sane”. Nonetheless, it is important to remember that children have a very different emotional reaction to pain than adults do, and for some kids it can still be a scary experience.
Tips! If you have a doctor's visit with planned blood test included - ask your doctor to draw extra blood and to drip it on the test card.
Where to poke the finger?
Please, note:
It is important not to prick the centre of the finger tip, as the blood flow is weaker. This might be painful. Likewise, the thumb is not recommended for capillary blood collection.
